Ohio State, which recently recorded its third straight top-three finish at the NCAA Championships, placed two wrestlers on TheOpenMat.com’s Division I All-Freshmen Team, the organization announced today. Luke Pletcher was a second-team choice at 141 lbs. while Kollin Moore made the first team at 197 lbs.
Pletcher, a three-time Pennsylvania state champion from Latrobe, Pa., entered the Buckeyes’ lineup as a true freshman in December and responded with a stellar campaign. He was 25-9 on the season and finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships, helping the Buckeyes win their second team title in the past three years. An automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships, Pletcher advanced to the Round of 16 and nearly upset sixth-seeded Anthony Ashnault in the second round. During the regular season he went 8-2 in dual, 6-2 against Big Ten opponents, and knocked off four ranked opponents.
A redshirt freshman from Burbank, Ohio, Moore burst onto the scene at 197 lbs. and finished 33-4 with a Big Ten title and NCAA third-place finish to his credit. Moore won 18 of his final 20 matches, including a run through the Big Ten Championships that included a 15-11 win over top-seeded Brett Pfarr of Minnesota in the finals. Moore won 19 matches this year via bonus points (six falls, nine major decisions, four technical falls) and is the third freshman All-American for the Scarlet and Gray in the past three years.
With Moore and Pletcher’s help, Ohio State finished as the national runner-up at the NCAA Championships, marking the 10th time in the last 11 years that the Tom Ryan-led Buckeyes have placed in the top 10 of the team standings. Ohio State returns all 10 starters and a school-record six All-Americans in 2017-18.
